Internationalisation of research in higher education. RED24992

First phase of the network: thirteen state universities, an itinerant doctoral-level school and an open-access repository.

Project director: María Jacqueline Rojas Ríos, Universidad de Playa Ancha. Deputy coordinator: Marcel Thezá Manríquez, Universidad de Los Lagos.

Funding: State Universities Strengthening Plan. Period: January 2024 to June 2026.

The project formed part of the 2024 State Universities Strengthening Plan and brought together thirteen state universities, with PIIE and IESED-Chile as national partners and InterRed, led by the OUI, as international partner.

Its diagnosis warned that Chilean educational research had grown in productivity but not in quality: only 20 % of publications appear in high-impact journals and 39 % lack international cooperation, a variable closely associated with quality. In addition, only two of the country’s ten most productive universities are state institutions, doctoral programmes in education are scarce, and none of those offered by state universities reaches levels of excellence.

The general objective was to contribute to cooperative inter-university relations in higher education research within the inter-American context. It proposed consolidating the Inter-American Network and designing an Itinerant School of doctoral-level courses; promoting academic mobility and postdoctoral stays through validated models and protocols; and creating a dissemination space with an observatory of good practices and an open-access repository.

The project was conceived as a first phase aimed at strengthening the national and international network and generating shared documents, laying the groundwork for its continuation in RED25992.
